Bunnahabhain Distillery – Islay’s Gentle Dram

Founded: 1881

Bunnahabhain Distillery, established in 1881 by William Robertson and the Greenlees brothers, is located on the northeastern coast of Islay, Scotland.

The distillery’s name, derived from Scottish Gaelic, means “mouth of the river,” reflecting its position at the mouth of the Margadale River. Unlike many Islay distilleries known for heavily peated whiskies, Bunnahabhain is renowned for its unpeated or lightly peated single malts, offering a milder profile with notes of dried fruit, nuts, and a subtle maritime influence. The distillery has experienced various ownership changes and periods of closure, notably in the 1930s and early 1980s.

In 2003, it was acquired by Burn Stewart Distillers, later becoming part of the Distell Group. Today, Bunnahabhain continues to produce its distinctive whiskies, maintaining traditional methods and a commitment to quality.
