Tomintoul

Description

Tomintoul Distillery, located on the banks of the River Avon and named after Scotland’s highest village, was founded in 1965 during the whisky boom of the 1960s. Initially built with two stills, the distillery has expanded to accommodate four, and its whisky style has evolved over the years. Originally known for a fruity profile, Tomintoul’s whisky production has shifted to a more cereal-accented style in recent years. The distillery also produces a peated variant, marketed as Old Ballantruan, which has added diversity to its range.

Tomintoul’s increasing presence in the single malt whisky market is gaining recognition for its quality. The distillery was first established by whisky broking firms Hay & MacLeod and W. & S. Strong and was folded into the Whyte & Mackay group in 1973. It remained a part of Whyte & Mackay until 2000 when it was acquired by Angus Dundee Distillers. Today, Tomintoul serves both as a producer of whisky for blends and under its own single malt brand, further solidifying its place in the industry.
