Strathearn is a pioneering microdistillery that embodies the innovative spirit of Scotland’s modern craft whisky movement. Known for its experimental approach, the distillery ensures each batch of whisky is one-of-a-kind. Using tiny stills, it produces both double- and triple-distilled whiskies with peated and unpeated malts, aged in an eclectic mix of 50-litre casks, including Sherry, rum, and Bourbon. Alongside whisky, Strathearn also creates a variety of gins and rums.
Located in Methven, near Crieff in Highland Perthshire, Strathearn began operations in 2013, making it Scotland’s smallest distillery. It occupies converted farm buildings and operates with an 800-litre wash still and a 400-litre spirit still. Even its casks are unusually small, holding just 50 litres compared to the standard 200 litres. The distillery’s owners prioritize flexibility, a common trait among craft distilleries.
In October 2019, Strathearn was acquired by independent bottler Douglas Laing & Co, marking the company’s first distillery purchase. While Douglas Laing now oversees whisky production, Strathearn’s gin and rum offerings continue under a new company, The Whisky Garden Ltd.
